fairly to say,I don't think it's must.
But if you don't set it, many email providers like AOL,Earthlink (and once Gmail) will reject your messages.

If I remember that correctly, RFC2505 mentions it may have a reverve record (the PTR) for outgoing mail servers for best practice.But that's not absolutely needed.
