the (bind) resolver's work is to find MX record asap, so the resolver asks
for MX, and if it founds MX (and apropriate A, it does not check anything
else. It may asks root servers for MX, receive NS delegation and ask for MX
there... voila - there it is in 2 requests.

otoh, the Derek's script's work is to debug all possible problems - ask
root servers for NS delegations and ask EVERY resulting NS for possibly
other delegations, check ALL nameservers for MX and validate them all.
Everything should be checked and only one error should cause listing.

IIUC, the script does not check delegated servers for MX, just for
authoritative NS records. Maybe this is what's wrong - if any servers in the
delegation path returns bogus MX, the domain should be listed, no matter if
the answer is authoritative...
