[RFCI-Discuss] HELO required

Hi,

I'm not sure this is the proper list to send this message to, but... 
here goes.

My MTA requires connecting clients to send a HELO first. This is just an 
attempt to  drop part of the SPAM early on. Here's an example session 
with the server:

ovidiu at ovidiu-desktop:~$ nc mail.devstudio.eu smtp
220 mail.devstudio.eu ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu)
MAIL FROM:<>
503 5.5.1 Error: send HELO/EHLO first
---------------------------------------------------------------

Is this a violation of any RFC? Should I drop that requirement?
