I just checked, you're right, but ONLY in the case of null sender:

HELO tests

For an empty Return-Path as used in error messages and other
auto-replies SPF checks the HELO-identity. Actually it checks an
artificial postmaster at mail.example.org address for a HELO or EHLO
mail.example.org.

You don't need to, however the fact remains that in this case your
submission was rejected because it was incorrect.
