it's not about other MUA's. 80 characters long lines are standardly used in
UNIX and PC environment for years. If you want longer lines, use html (I
don't recommend) or flowed-format plaintext e-mail (see rfc 2646)

This is an exemption widely accepted.

do you (probably) want other people to read your e-mail, or you write it for
yourself? Do you found e-mail from other people annoying if it has lines
shorter than your screen size?

Having to wrap plaintext lines on standard (80char) screen is much more
annoying. Plaintext is plaintext, should be wrapped only where newline is
included, not anywhere user wishes.

I don't think there's a requirement on how often you should retry
(others might comment). Server not reachable is understood as having
temporary error, after 5 days the error is understood as permanent.
SMTP is not designed for hosts that are up few hours a day.

in such case wou won't be able to provide delivery error message.
